Written by Allyson Cain, Children & Youth Intern

“Lord, listen to your children praying,

Lord, send your spirit in this place;
Lord, listen to your children praying.
Send us love, send us power, send us grace.”

This is my tenth summer to spend with First Christian Church of Edmond. I have had the privilege to spend seven summers as a student and three more as an intern. These summers included relationship building, educational experiences, and spiritual growth.

As a student, I treasured the memories from mission trips, working in the hot summer sun in Louisiana, going on a two-week musical tour, and being still and encountering God in the mountains. Now as an intern, I cherish the opportunity to give back to a program that has given me so much, and to watch our students have the same experiences.

So, now what? Many of us have been at that place in our lives at least once. We get all too familiar with what is comfortable, then change comes knocking on our door and we don’t know if we should answer it or run and hide. What if I told you not everything had to change? God is still there. The relationships, experiences, and opportunities God has given you have prepared you for something new.

On the work mission trips, I learned what hard work looks like. On the two-week musical tour, I learned a better sense of time management and what it looks like to share God’s word through song. On our mission trips to Estes Park, Colorado, I learned to be still and know God is always there.

Everyday, God places people in your life, giving you experiences and blessing you with opportunities to be the hands and feet of Jesus Christ. So, what are you waiting for? Get moving!

As I realize my days as an intern are coming to an end, I cannot help but say “thank you” to the people who have helped me in my faith journey, for the experiences I have been given, and for the opportunities to make a difference.

Have you been in the same place for a while? Are you comfortable where you are? Is change knocking on your door?  Wherever you are, be thankful God has a plan and has prepared you and your heart for whatever comes next.

The song I invite you to use, as your prayer for this week, is a song sung to me on many of my mission trips and a song I sing to our students. As I turn the page into the next chapter of my life, it will continue to be a song I sing about all of God’s children I encounter.

“Lord, listen to your children praying,
Lord, send your spirit in this place;
Lord, listen to your children praying.
Send us love, send us power, send us grace.”
