Willingness to Work Hard

"Whatever you do, work at it with all you heart, as working for the Lord, not for men. Colossians 3:23 (NIV)

"Whatever may be your task, work at it heartily (from the soul), as [something done] for the Lord and not for men." (Amplified)

When our children were preschoolers we had a routine. We would bathe and prepare for bed by doing our chores. Then they would help Robert and I to fold laundry, put away the dishes, dust, wipe the bathroom counters, etc. It wasn’t that we were mean parents—it was that we wanted to spend time with them AND we wanted them to know how to do the things that they would someday need to do for themselves. They did not do a perfect job—but they did a good job for their abilities.

Today they are both grown, married and parents themselves. They both enjoy having an orderly house AND I’ve seen them require their own children to help with chores. Their abilities have grown and they have even taught Robert and I more efficient ways to do our chores.

I happen to think that God has given us chores, too. He shows us how to listen to others, to be kind and put the needs of other people ahead of our own. He knows our level of sophistication and gives us many opportunities to learn how to do chores. He isn’t satisfied with a haphazard job. He wants our best AND he gives us the tools to grow in our skills so that we can show our children how to do chores.

Lord, show us how to demonstrate work that is done for you—work completed with all the passion and talent we can bring to the task—work completed for you. Amen
