"Where is the Evidence?" By Rev. Mark Taylor

Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.
Hebrews 11:1

I was driving down Interstate 35 a couple of weeks ago and saw a religious billboard. To be honest, I don’t have a very high opinion of religious billboards. I don’t imagine many people drive down the interstate, see the billboard and immediately turn their lives around based on what they saw. Don’t get me wrong; I believe God can and will use anything placed in our paths to work in our lives. I’m just not sure these billboards are the most effective use of resources.

That being said, the billboard I saw had a picture of an infant accompanied by the statement, “There IS evidence for God!” My first thought when I saw the billboard was, “Wow, that religious billboard is actually kind of decent!” Then I started thinking about the miracle of childbirth and how yes, I do consider the birth of my children to be some of the most spiritually significant moments I have ever experienced. All things considered, I had a decent and positive attitude about this billboard.

Later that night, I began thinking and wondered why we feel the need to prove God’s existence. Is God not big enough to handle our questions? Are we that uncertain in our own faith that we have to be like the apostle “Doubting” Thomas and require some hard proof before we can trust God? Have you ever stopped to think about how God feels about our constant need to prove we are right? God does not call us to prove God is real. God calls us to live by faith: faith that God is present with us through all of life’s ups and downs, faith that God is the source of everyday miracles, and faith that God is big enough for our questions.

Maybe when people see our faith in action, that faith that shines through every aspect of our lives, they will see this as evidence of who God is.

God, teach us how to live the life you call us to live. Give us real faith that can wrestle with and stand up to doubts and hard questions. Let us demonstrate our faith through our lives each day. Amen
