"The Way We Should Go" by Rev. Chris Shorow

It’s Thursday morning and I sit here reflecting on another wonderful Unite gathering last night. Our Unite activities are some of my favorites. How can you not enjoy watching over 150 kids get together with a similar number of adults for food, fellowship, and Christian learning? Our program that started at First Christian many years ago as Kid’s Club, has evolved into a meaningful family event, an event for God’s family, a time to Unite.

Teaching our children the ways of faith and encouraging them on their faith journey is something our church is good at doing. From volunteers who teach and lead our children in various ways, to small group leaders who dedicate six years of their lives to lead a group of middle school through high school youth through pivotal years in their faith development, the witness of these adults is right in line with a favorite scripture—Prov. 22:6 “Train children in the right way, and when old, they will not stray.”

One of the reasons this is so important is because many times children can hear a confusing mix of teachings from television and even from other friends. The allure of prestige, status, and expensive stuff can take away from what Christ called us to value—our God, our neighbor, and the love of others. We strive to teach our children the joy of serving Christ, who became a servant of others.

I love spending time with my children and kids from our youth group as they do outreach activities. To see them having fun while serving others captures the heart of the Christian message—we find joy in reaching out and serving others.

It is ironic that I read a message from my friend, Bill McCutchen, giving his Elder’s Meditation for the day. He quotes Chief Red Cloud, “We do not want riches, but we want to train our children right. Riches would do us no good. We could not take them with us to the other world. We do not want riches, we want peace and love.”

Today I’m leading the funeral service for Karen Anderson. A long-time (over 45 years!) and devoted church member, Karen spent many years directing Kid’s Club. Her selfless devotion to all of the children and families she served over the years has touched countless lives. I celebrate her devotion to these timeless words of scripture and I invite you to join in training our children in Christ’s way. After all, to get the peace and love we all desire, it will take wise and inspired children!
