Salt of the Earth - Geri Moffatt

“You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot.” – Matthew 5:13

The expression Salt of the Earth goes back to the Sermon on the Mount in which Jesus reveals a model for how Christians are to live their lives. Many think of the Sermon on the Mount as being to the New Testament what the Ten Commandments are to the Old Testament. The Sermon on the Mount contains the very heart of Jesus’ teaching. Just after Jesus had given his disciples the Beatitudes he goes on to say that Christians are to be the salt of the earth.

Salt was incredibly valuable during Jesus’ time. It was essential to preserve fish, meat, and vegetables. Roman soldiers were paid in salt. It had the same value ounce for ounce as gold. So, what did Jesus mean when he stated salt, which loses its flavor, is only fit to be trampled?

At the time of Jesus, houses were built with (or added to them) upper rooms where guests could stay for the night or used for special occasions. These rooms usually had floors composed of wood which had a special mix of plaster laid over them. Ordinary plaster used for building structures like walls was too soft for floors since it was prone to peeling, cracking, and falling apart. Adding salt to plaster made it hard enough to withstand the wear and tear experienced by a floor. The salt would then be impure and unable to fulfill its role as a seasoning agent. In this state, it was only good to be walked on.

Jesus said Christians are to be the salt of the earth and directs them to let their light shine before all men. Be the salt of the earth. Bring out the true flavor of what it is to be truly alive. Be life givers to others. That is what Jesus tells the disciples to be. That is what Jesus tells us to be and do. Love each other. Christians, like salt, need to live life so they can maximize their ability to “flavor” or to bless the earth through their good works.

When Jesus gives us the name of “salt”, He is reminding us we have the opportunity and the responsibility to be an influence in the world. Jesus tells those who follow him they must make a difference in the world.

I think Jesus wants us to improve the quality of life of those we meet each day. How can we do this? By showing them having Jesus in our life is like having salt on our food. Everything is better when we have Jesus in our life. If you and I will show the love of Jesus in all we do, we can be the salt of the earth like Jesus called us to be. Just a pinch of salt can do much to reduce bitterness and bring peace to our world.

Father, may we be the salt of the earth by showing the love of Jesus in all that we do. Amen

Today, I went to the beach front with my
children. I found a sea shell and gave it to my 4 year old daughter and said "You can hear the ocean if you put this to your ear." She placed the
shell to her ear and screamed. There was
a hermit crab inside and it pinched her ear. She never wants
to go back! LoL I know this is completely off topic but I had to tell
someone!
