Perseverance - Karla Rowley
Psalm 139: 33 - Explore me, O God, and know the real me. Dig deeply and discover who I am. Put me to the test and watch how I handle the strain.
a. The steady persistence in a course of action, a purpose, a state, etc., especially in spite of difficulties, obstacles, or discouragement.
b. Theology. Continuance in a state of grace to the end, leading to eternal salvation.
Once there was a woman I knew who had five children. They ranged in age from newborn to 13 years of age. After their fourth son was born, she found herself without a husband. He decided to leave and begin another life for himself.
The year was 1925 and she faced a situation filled with difficult choices and decisions. She loved her children and went on to raise them alone. She persevered in providing shelter, clothing, schooling, and all other necessities of life for her five children. She worked as a seamstress, cook, and house mom for a fraternity at OU.
I never remember hearing her complain about what life handed her. Our last conversation was about her hopes for me. She told me she had enjoyed all of the opportunities she had experienced for learning—both the positive and the negative and she was especially glad that as she grew older she continued to learn. She told me she hoped I would learn all through my life and I would be able to raise a family of my own.
I owe her so much and I hope someday in the future to be able to talk to her about how my own life turns out. Our last conversation is a watershed moment in my life. The morning after our conversation, my mother, her oldest child and I found her dead. She wasn’t the first relative I had who died—but she was the one I was the closest to since I had spent weeks in the summers with her from the time I was born. She was the only grandparent I ever knew.
It was her example and the example of my parents that influence my own desire to persevere.
Father God, thank you for all the lessons I learned from Ruby Wilson Landtroop. Amen.
