“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world, you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” John 16:33
There is a magnet I have kept on my kitchen refrigerator for well over 20 years. It has moved from fridge to fridge and home to home, yet really isn’t anything special. In fact, I can’t even remember where I found it. However, I look at it often and find comfort in its message:
"Peace. It does not mean to be in a place where there is no noise, trouble or hard work. It means to be in the midst of those things and still be calm in your heart." (unknown)
Sometimes its message is a whisper, sometimes a loud shout. Sometimes life and day-to-day events seem to breeze by and I realize I haven’t read my “message” in a few days. On those days, I give thanks. Other times, when life feels harsh, I’m surrounded by change or unmet expectations fill my soul, I take a deep breath, read my “message,” say a prayer, and focus on letting the dark clouds float by. In the midst of the chaos, I seek to find calmness and peace in my heart.
Life can be filled with irritation, trouble, anger, hurt, sadness, hard work, doubt, worry – the noises of the world. But, to embrace these feelings, to acknowledge these emotions, and to recognize their temporary existence in our lives, leaves room for a calm peace in our hearts.
Whether it’s scripture, a refrigerator magnet, a quote from a friend, or your own special mantra, find reminders to quiet your storm, fill you with comfort, and bring you peace.
