Passion for God
Rev. Micah James
“Lord, please instill in my children a soul that follows after You; a heart that clings passionately to You.” Psalm 63:8
I am very passionate about a lot of things in life. TCU Football. Great Mexican food. My children’s education. When someone tries to interfere and make those it anything but a fantastic experiences, I get very upset.
Passion is the spark inside us that makes us come alive. There is something special about passion.
Howard Thurman described passion like this, “Don’t ask yourself what the world needs; ask yourself what makes you come alive. And then go and do that. Because what the world needs is people who have come alive.”
When I teach and preach on stewardship, I often ask people what movie or restaurant they last got really excited about. What was the thing that last made them really passionate? That “thing” is usually something they told their friends about. That “thing” is usually something they are willing to share. That “thing” reveals a passion.
Passion is a funny thing. It drives us to follow. If I have the chance to see TCU Football, I go. If I have the chance to go to a great Mexican restaurant, I go. If I have a chance to contribute to my children’s education, I’m there.
The question I constantly ask myself is, “Am I as excited about my faith, as I am about _____?” I find it to be a good question of orientation in my spiritual practice.
Our faith needs to have that same drive, that same spark. It needs to make us come alive. Each time we hear part of God’s story in scripture, we need to be on the edge of our seat waiting to hear a new revelation. Each time we gather for worship, we need to be full of gratitude for the One who freely gave to us. Our faith, our passion for God, needs to drive us to follow God in Jesus Christ in a way where if we get a chance to serve, give, proclaim, or go in the name of God we will.
There are a lot of things to be passionate about in this world and our kids are watching. I wonder what passions they will see when they look at us?
Calling God, draw us toward you. Claim our hearts for you so that a spark may ignite within our souls for your service. Amen.
