Not a lightweight activity - Rev. Micah James

One of my favorite passages of scripture is from Colossians…

“As God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience. Bear with one another and, if anyone has a complaint against another, forgive each other; just as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. Above all, clothe yourselves with love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony. And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in the one body. And be thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly; teach and admonish one another in all wisdom; and with gratitude in your hearts sing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs to God. And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.” - Colossians 3:12-17 NRSV

If I have two minutes to tell someone what it means to follow Jesus, I would probably quote this verse.

At first read, you get a warm and fuzzy feeling about this wonderful community God has created in Christ. Upon second glance, the text feels a little heavier, because this is not a lightweight activity we are asked to enter into. To be quite honest, this is quite a high standard to hold ourselves too, day-in and day-out.

However, this is not an image of solo faith, but community faith. The picture painted in this passage is the greatest accountability group every created, one that will learn and grow together. Will the community ever accomplish all the things on this list perfectly? Not on their own. Christ bonds us across faults, failures, brokenness, mistakes, disagreements, complaints, and calls us to forgive, love, and be thankful in peace.

Everyday, I am thankful for a community that supports me as I try to do my best being all that Christ has called me and us to be.

God who chose us, help us to wear these clothes of compassion, kindness with grace and patience, in Christ name, Amen.
