Love Finds Expression in New Ways in the Digital Age - Rev. Dr. John Regan

Psalm 67: 1-3 May God be gracious to us and bless us and make his face to shine upon us, that your way may be known upon the earth, your saving power among all nations

We are living through strange and interesting economic times. Our digital technology is transforming the landscape of business and how we work. The number one hotel chain in the world, Airbnb, does not own a single hotel. It simply connects people who are traveling and need a place to stay with people who are willing to rent a room, an apartment, or a house to make some extra cash. The largest cab company in the world does not own a single car but is worth 150 billion dollars. Uber, is the “cab” company that with your mobile phone you can get a quote on the cost of the trip, summon an independent driver to pick you up, and then at your destination pay for the trip and tip your driver!

I recently heard a story about a group of Uber drivers who regularly meet at a pancake house at 3:30am in the morning between the ending of the night shift and the beginning of the day shift. This group of Uber drivers has become a kind of extended family. Not long ago one of their drivers had an adult child who became seriously ill and could not work. The extended family of drivers stepped into the gap and paid the utilities and the mortgage for their friend’s daughter until she could go home from the hospital.

Sometimes we think the church provides all of the hands and feet of Christ in the world. This sometimes leads us to the fallacy that God’s kingdom is overly dependent upon us. However, biblical record and church history tell us a much richer and surprising story. God’s love is constantly finding expression wherever we see human beings taking care of each other. God uses all of creation to establish God’s kingdom. Sure God uses the church, but God also uses ordinary human beings and organizations to do great things.

I know that for many of us culture, society, and technology are evolving at an uncomfortable pace. But we must remember and trust that the God who created us can probably keep up with whatever the cleverest humans can invent. Every time I hear Uber mentioned in the news, I am reminded of the resourcefulness of God to transform our world through human innovation and human community. The extended family of Uber drivers is just a small but magnificent reminder of the extraordinary feats of God achieved through ordinary people.

Gracious God, heighten our vision to see the hidden work of your Kingdom in the ordinary things right in front of us. Amen
