Lenten Devotional By Marcy Williams

In early 1980’s we began regularly attending First Christian Church when our oldest son joined the Scout troop. We joined the Sunday school class taught by Bill and Helen Chitwood and began to talk about transferring our membership from the First Methodist Church to First Christian.

One Saturday in February I woke with a backache. It wasn’t really that unusual for me, but by Sunday, the pain increased so I skipped church. I felt sure I would be better by Monday and ready to be at work. Unfortunately, I came to the realization that wasn’t going to be possible when I woke in the middle of the night and had to crawl backwards to get to the bathroom.
On Monday I stayed in bed until a doctor’s appointment that afternoon. Walking had become extremely difficult and the doctor did a few tests on my legs and said I needed to go to the hospital. That really shocked and scared me!
I was admitted to Edmond Hospital and the following day an orthopedic surgeon explained the pain appeared to be causing numbness in my left leg. A myelogram was ordered to provide a clear picture of the problem. Now I was really getting scared. I managed to limp down the hallway to the chapel, sat down with my Bible, and let it just fall open. There before me was Psalm 18: “I love you, Lord, my strength. The Lord is my rock, my fortress, and my deliverer…” Though I was still scared and unsure, I felt a sense of calmness cover over me. I felt His strength in those words.
The next day the myelogram showed a mass in my lumbar spine. The doctors said it was either a tumor or a ruptured disc and surgery was imperative to keep from having further nerve damage. Surgery the following day removed the ruptured disc.
The sense of peace and comfort the scripture gave me as I read and re-read it accompanied my recovery. Even today, over 30 years later, that scripture gives me confidence in God’s comfort and healing.

“I love you, OLord, my strength. TheLordis my rock, my fortress, and my deliverer, my God, my rock in whom I take refuge, my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold. I call upon theLord, who is worthy to be praised, so I shall be saved from my enemies.” – Psalm 18:1-3 NRSV

Reflection Question: When has God been your healing refuge?

Prayer: Holy God, for the times where we lean on you in our life, we give thanks. Amen.
