I am Still Human - Heather Portillo
“If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. If we claim we have not sinned, we make him out to be a liar and his word is not in us.” 1 John 1:8-10
Did you stop sinning when you accepted the gift of salvation through Jesus? Neither did I. I certainly tried to stop sinning, however, the truth of the matter is that I am still human and still bent toward sin.
A mistake we sometimes make is to downplay the need for continued repentance because of the grace we’ve received through Christ. In reality, we should be praying daily for God to reveal to us the error of our ways. We should ask him to show us how we are limiting or hurting ourselves and others because we are blind to our sin. Just as there is no such thing as a little lie, there is also no such thing as a little sin. Thankfully though, there is also no such thing as a little forgiveness!
We are saved by grace and freed to live out our gratitude for this salvation by daily reflection on our thoughts, actions, and motives.
Father, please help me to remember that even though I am forgiven and made new, I still need to cling to you through your word and prayer so that I can be refined in my thinking and actions. In this way, may I be more like you and be a proper representation of your love to those around me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
