Growing in Grace
Written by Jackie Booher
“Therefore, dear friends, since you already know this, be on your guard so that you may not be carried away by the error of lawless men and fall from your secure position. But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and forever! Amen” - 2 Peter 3:17 – 18
When my oldest daughter was a senior at North High School she played on the golf team. I regretfully worked in downtown Oklahoma City and could not be there for her or attend most of her tournaments, so she would usually ride in a carpool with the other team members. One day on the way home from a tournament, the car full of girls and golf clubs were rear ended by a newly licensed 16-year-old young man who was recklessly speeding.
Knees hit the dashboard, golf clubs flew forward hitting the girls, and initially it was hard to tell how serious the injuries were. The young lady driving was quite injured, but was able to call her Dad. Fortunately, he wasn’t too far away and was able to get to the accident scene quickly.
While they waited for police and emergency help, her Dad gathered the girls in a circle on the sidewalk to pray. They prayed not only for their circle of injured girls, but also for the young man who had hit them. This Dad was the perfect example of forgiveness and grace.
When my daughter called me to tell me what happened, I had this overwhelming sense of thanksgiving. Thanksgiving for this Dad who had the grace to pray not only for our girls, but also for the offending young man.
“Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.” - Hebrews 4:16
Prayer - “I pray that they may ‘grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ’” (2 Peter 3:18).
