Finding my Future - Robbi Kinnaird

As a young single mother in the mid 80s, life was a challenge. The routine was the same: get up, get ready, get my daughter ready, take her to daycare, meet my carpool ride at her apartment, travel to Oklahoma City, work in the basement of Penn Square Bank, travel back to Edmond, gather my daughter from daycare, go home, fix dinner, try to have quality time together, go to bed exhausted, wake up and do it all over again. While there was an element of comfort in the routine, there was an emptiness and loneliness in the midst of the chaos.

As the years went on, the bank failed, another job presented itself and I moved out of the basement and into the world of Bank Marketing. Thankful for my family helping with my daughter and for tuition reimbursement, I worked during the day and attended UCO at night. The friendships I formed during those years were invaluable, precious, and long lasting. It was through those friendships and our adventures together that I met my husband.

After years of being single, I met someone who accepted my daughter, my life, and all the chaos without hesitation. He was a person who stepped into a ready-made family and took on the role of provider, supporter, father, and friend to a very opinionated and strong-willed 10-year-old girl. And, he met the challenge of stepping into my world of “I can do it myself” with love, respect, and support.

Twenty-five years have passed; “my” daughter has become “our” daughter, three more children, one grandchild and many memories of good times and challenges. No more loneliness. No more emptiness. To just say my prayer was answered would be limiting how God has worked and continues to work in my life. Each challenge, each stumble, each joy and each celebration offers strength and healing and comfort. Our partnership has created a family, offered amazing moments, and given each of us hope, that life and love and a future can be found through faith.

"But surely, God is my helper;the Lord is the upholder of my life." - Psalm 54:4 NRSV

Reflection Question:

In each moment of struggle, how do you lean into God's sustaining love?

Great Sustainer,
I give you thanks for the fullness of life - ups and downs.
Help me always to see your beauty amidst the chaos.
