Early Rising – Rev. Micah James
With my whole heart I cry; answer me, O Lord. I will keep your statutes.
I cry to you; save me, that I may observe your decrees.
I rise before dawn and cry for help; I put my hope in your words.
My eyes are awake before each watch of the night, that I may meditate on your promise.
In your steadfast love hear my voice; O Lord, in your justice preserve my life.
– Psalm 119: 145-149 NRSV
Since the beginning of the New Year, Nick and I have attempted to get up before our kids do. Until this year, we just let our kids wake us up at whatever time they happened to wake up. They were pretty consistent, so it gave us plenty of time to get everything ready for the day, but it always left us feeling rushed.
Nick and I have attempted this new habit of early rising as a part of a new pattern of life. We wanted to see what it would be like to put a little space between us and the busy parts of the morning. Not only has it improved our mornings, for me, it has improved my outlook on the day.
I used to wait until I got the kids off to school until I would pause, take a deep breath, and pray – and to be honest, that didn’t happen every day.
With these extra moments of peace before the hustle and bustle begins, we are finding fresh ways to breathe in the newness of each day and, in our own unique style, we find a way to give thanks for what the day will bring.
Creator God, You are the one who breathes each new day into being. Thank you for the precious gift of time and space that you have given us to be and to live. Amen.
