A Biblical Journey of Courage, Charles Weddle

Mark Twain once said, “Courage is resistance to fear, mastery of fear—not absence of fear.” I believe there is an element of faith involved in courageous acts, as well. For example, when Abraham was instructed by God to sacrifice his son, Isaac, as a burnt offering, Abraham complied. The scriptures don’t mention Abraham’s feelings, but instead he proceeds to complete the task. Abraham was as human and earthly as you and I. I can’t imagine he didn’t have some misgivings about God’s command. Obviously, Abraham had to overcome fear of failure and disappointing God. Both faith and courage were needed for Abraham to complete God’s command. As we know from scripture, God was merely testing Abraham’s strength and commitment to Him, and Isaac’s life was spared.

“It takes a lot of courage to show your dreams to someone else,” said Erma Bombeck. When Jesus approached his future disciples and asked them to leave their professions and follow Him, courage was necessary on the part of both parties. After Jesus was crucified, He sent His disciples and Paul out to preach His word. Now that required a great deal of courage for those brave men who encountered hostile resistance from many, leading to physical abuse and death in some instances. As a result, the dreams of one man, Jesus, became the focus of His courageous followers then and now.

Finally, Theodore Roosevelt once stated, “Courage is not having the strength to go on, it is going on when you don’t have the strength.” When Jesus was sentenced to death, He was beaten and then paraded through Jerusalem carrying the cross upon which He was to be crucified. While carrying the cross, He became weary, and a man from Cyrene, named Siwan, picked up Jesus’ cross and carried it for Him. As we know, Jesus was physically exhausted, but He completed the journey to His death. By Jesus’ determination to complete the journey under such dire circumstances, He gave believers eternal life.

There are numerous men and women in the Bible who courageously followed the Word of God. Jesus provided the reality of God on earth which reinforced God’s Word in human form. Due to the covenant Jesus made with mankind, courage to promote God’s Word was and is necessary. Today Christians are persecuted and oftentimes killed for their beliefs. Do you possess the same courage to profess your faith in Jesus Christ regardless of the outcome?
